At first, “interior design trends” can feel like an oxymoronic term. Decor doesn’t tend to undergo seasonal changes or flash-in-the-pan fads—furniture, textiles, art, and wall coverings are too cumbersome, too expensive, too enduring to update frequently. As the saying goes, when you design a room, you need to learn to live with it. For a long time.

Yet the pendulum does swing, albeit over years and decades: 1970s shag-carpeted bohemianism gives way to 1980s glitzy excess, which gives way to 1990s palate-cleansing minimalism. So, as we enter 2023—and finding interior solutions that are kind to both our sanity and the planet feels more important than ever—a sense of permanence is key to understanding which way the 2020s are headed. What will feel timeless or au courant for several years to come, and what is on its way to feeling dated? For starters: earth tones – which, due thanks to their calming effects and associations with nature, increased in popularity during the pandemic years – still rule three years in. Shades of brown continue their decor dominance, while romantic mauve, Kathryn M. Ireland and Jake Arnold predict, is the colour of the year to come. Meanwhile, multiple interior designers are opting for silver accents over gold or bronze. “Its captivating shine and texture lend an everyday sophistication to any space,” says Athena Calderone. Certain design hallmarks from periods past are also making a return: after the dominance of the laid-back mid-century modern in the aughts and teens, for example, formal accents are now making a comeback. (As Robert D. McKinley surmises, we’re all craving a little more sophistication after spending all that COVID-era time in sweatpants.) A little more controversially, perhaps, brutalism is back in too. Concrete floors anyone?

However, preface this all with a “neo”. Twenty23 doesn’t copy the past, but merely uses it as inspiration – our newfound interest in brutalism, for example, makes sure to infuse the aesthetic concept with warmer touches. “That’s the cyclical nature of trends I suppose—they always stem from someplace in history, allowing for modern interpretation,” Calderone observes.

What’s falling by the wayside? It seems the “modern farmhouse” aesthetic has hit its saturation point, as have beds adorned with a million pillows. (C’mon, it just ends up being a lot of clutter.) We can also wave goodbye to fast furniture—unsurprising given that more often than not, it just ends up discarded on a curb. A more environmentally conscious approach to interior design is always in.

Brand building is a critical part of starting a business. A great business idea or innovative product means nothing if you can’t communicate it to the world—specifically in a way that your target audience can relate to.

Your brand image in the minds of your customers, competition, and the market all comes down to brand positioning and the aesthetic choices you make. But your brand identity is more than a logo. It encompasses everything from your unique brand personality to your mission statement to the consistent color palette you use across every channel. In this guide, learn how to build your own brand from scratch and create a compelling and memorable brand identity that resonates with your target audience. Plus, explore what it takes to create a brand logo or catchy slogan, with real examples from successful brands and branding design tips from experts.

What is a brand?

A brand defines a business, product, service, person, or concept in the market. It differentiates your business from others in the same industry and has a set of rules (called brand guidelines) that dictate how that business will be marketed and presented. Branding is the process of establishing a brand—how it looks, what it sounds like, and the defined target audience it hopes to reach.

What are the building blocks of a brand?

Brand is more than a logo. It’s more than a slogan or colour palette. To build a successful brand, there’s plenty of ground work that needs to be done before you can start designing a website or creating marketing materials.

Here are the building blocks that will be included in your overall brand guidelines document:

Target audience

Defining your target audience is one of the most important stages of creating a brand from scratch. Everything stems from this. Defining your audience in detail helps you build a brand that speaks directly to it. Later in this article, you’ll learn tactics for understanding this audience.

Brand identity

Your brand identity encompasses your business name and the visual elements that define your brand, from your logo and colors to the aesthetic of your photography and your social media handles. Brand identity also includes your brand’s story and competitive advantage.

Brand voice

Brand voice is how your brand sounds. Defining this ensures brand consistency across every customer touchpoint. If your customers expect a cheeky, frank tone from you on social media, carry that through into your website copy and other communications.

Mission and values

Your brand’s mission is the North Star for your business. It establishes both a goal for yourself and a promise to your customers. Your values are what your brand stands for. Both are important as you build your brand because they keep your decisions in check. Whatever you do as a brand should always stay true to your mission and values.

Style guide

Your brand style guide is one part of your larger brand guidelines. It spells out exactly how your brand will surface on every platform or channel. It covers acceptable use of your logo, fonts you use, brand voice and tone, and overall aesthetic of your brand. It’s a useful guide as you scale, hire, and use agencies to create work on your behalf.

The importance of brand guidelines

Brand guidelines are the bible for your brand. This document or set of documents will take a position on every aspect of your brand and how it shows up in various places. Every decision you make during the brand building process will be captured here.

A well-executed set of brand guidelines will achieve the following:

 • Keep staff, freelancers, retail partners, and agencies on the same page
 • Aid in staff hiring and training (what are the qualities your brand looks for in an employee?)
 • Ensure your branding is consistent across all touchpoints
 • Be a go-to resource for crisis communications
 • Be a flexible document that grows with your brand

How to build a brand in 7 steps

 1. Research your target market
 2. Determine your brand’s voice and personality
 3. Choose your business name
 4. Write your brand story
 5. Create a brand style guide
 6. Design your logo and brand assets
 7. Apply your branding across your business

As a small business owner, taking the time to establish your brand image is critical, especially if you’re entering a crowded market. And creating a solid foundation for your brand identity can help you build brand awareness over time.

While you might revisit some steps as you pivot or create your brand, it’s important you consider each aspect as you shape your brand identity. Bookmark this guide as a handy resource to access throughout your brand building journey.

1. Research your target market

The first step to building a successful brand is understanding the current market: Who are your potential customers and competitors? Every solid brand strategy and business plan is based on this very question.

You can’t create a brand logo unless you know the preferences of your audience. And developing a unique brand personality that stands out from the crowd can only happen once you know the competitive landscape.

There are many ways to conduct market research before you start the brand building process:

 • Google your product or service category and analyze the direct and indirect competitors that appear in search results.
 • Talk to people who are part of your target market and ask them what brands they buy from in your industry.
 • Look at the relevant social media accounts or pages your target audience follows.
 • Shop online or in retail stores and get a feel for how your customers would browse and buy products.
 • Investigate trends in your industry by reading publications, browning social media, and using Google Trends.

During your research, take note of the biggest brands in the market. What are they doing right? What do you offer that they don’t? This is called your unique selling proposition (USP).

You should also pay attention to the habits common to your target audience, like the platforms they use most, the language and slang they use, and how they engage with other brands. These insights will help you understand where and how best to reach them.

Lingerie brand Lemonade was built to create a size-inclusive and body-positive line of products for “every person.” While this may sound like a broad audience, Lemonade understands that its target customer is someone who doesn’t feel represented by typical lingerie brands.

Beyond saying it, Lemonade shows it’s a brand for all kinds of bodies by using diverse images that include plus models and offering a gender-affirming line.

2. Determine your brand’s voice and personality

Branding isn’t about trying to be everything to everyone. A strong POV will speak to the audience you care about most. It will tell this group that yours is a brand for them. To develop this POV and a distinct brand voice, there are several exercises you can complete.

Create a positioning statement

A positioning statement is one or two lines that stake your brand’s claim in the market. It won’t necessarily be a public-facing statement, but will help steer the direction of your brand story and other parts of your brand guidelines.

A positioning statement should outline what you sell, who it’s for, and what makes you unique. Your value proposition is what’s going to give you an edge—even in a crowded market.

Use this template to create yours:

“We offer [PRODUCT/SERVICE] for [TARGET MARKET] to [VALUE PROPOSITION]. Unlike [THE COMPETITION], we [KEY DIFFERENTIATOR].”

An example positioning statement might look something like this:

“We offer lightweight and waterproof daypacks for travelers, which fold into a wallet-sized pouch when not in use. Unlike other accessory brands, we guarantee our packs for life—no questions asked.”

💡 Tip: You can use this exercise as the basis for your mission statement—expand on your positioning statement to include your brand promise and what you stand for.

Brainstorm using word association

Imagine your brand as a person. What are they like? Do they have the kind of personality your customers would be attracted to? Describe this person. How can your description translate from a person to a brand? Fashion branding expert Joey Ng suggests narrowing your list of adjectives down to just three of the best words. “Find your niche and define in very few words what makes your brand distinctive,” she says. “If something doesn’t fit those original three words—even though you might like it—scrap it. Establish the core message, nail it, then expand.”

Hone your brand voice and tone

Your brand voice and tone will help you hone in on how you want to sound to customers and what you want them to feel when they interact with you. Is your voice cheeky or serious? Does it aim to be a reliable friend, a muse, or a trusted expert?

Establish a list of dos and don’ts that govern the language you will and won’t use in your communications. You may even want to drill down on specific communications channels like social media or customer service: How does your tone change depending on the situation?

3. Choose your business name

Your company’s name is probably one of the first big commitments you’ll make as a business owner. Ideally, you want a brand name that isn’t being used by another company (especially in your industry), has available social media handles, and is a fit based on your brand or products. It should be easy to remember and hard to imitate.

A few approaches to choosing a brand name include the following:

 • Make up a brand new word (e.g., Pepsi).
 • Reframe a word unrelated to your industry or product (e.g., Apple for computers or Maple for health care).
 • Use a suggestive word or metaphor (e.g., Buffer).
 • Describe it literally (e.g., The Shoe Company or Home Depot).
 • Alter a word by changing its spelling, removing letters, adding letters, or using Latin endings (e.g., Tumblr or Activia).
 • Create an acronym from a longer name (e.g., HBO for Home Box Office).
 • Use a portmanteau: Pinterest (pin + interest) or Snapple (snappy + apple).
 • Use your own name (e.g., Donna Karan or DKNY)

4. Write your brand story

Your brand story is the autobiography of your business and sometimes your own story as a founder. It’s a useful tool for branding because it humanizes your business to create meaningful connections with customers. Buyer trends point to an appetite for meaningful relationships with brands. The best way to do this is through a compelling, transparent, and authentic story.

What elements of your own story will resonate with your target audience? What do they need to know to connect with you as a person? How do you wrap your brand values and mission into your story to tell customers, “This is a brand for you”?

Creating a catchy slogan

Once you’ve established your positioning and your brand story, you can use this work to create a snappy slogan for your business. A good slogan is short, catchy, and makes a strong impression to boost brand awareness.

A clever slogan can increase brand awareness as customers start to recognize it—even when it’s divorced from your brand.

Here are some ways to approach writing your slogan:

 • Stake your claim, like this example from Death Wish Coffee: “The World’s Strongest Coffee.”
 • Make it a metaphor, just like Red Bull did: “Red Bull gives you wings.”
 • Adopt your customers’ attitude, like this unforgettable slogan from Nike: “Just do it.”
 • Speak to your target audience, like this example from Cards Against Humanity: “A party game for horrible people.”
 • Try a catchy rhyme, like this Folgers coffee slogan: “The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup.”
 • Establish an aesthetic or taste level, like this example from Aritzia: “Everyday luxury to elevate your world.”

5. Create a brand style guide

Now comes the fun part. Your style guide will include all the visual decisions you make for your brand. This guide will come in handy when you build your website, design your social media profile pages, and create product packaging.

Choosing your colors

Colors are important because, alongside copywriting, they tell potential customers how to feel about your brand. While color psychology is a contested science, there are some general associations you can make between color and mood. Moody darker cool colors may complement an edgy brand or a sleep brand while warm pastels tell a soothing story for baby or wellness brands.

Tips for choosing colors for your visual identity:

 • Consider how legibly white and black text will appear over your color palette.
 • Don’t use too many colors in your logo—it should be identifiable as a single color in a black and white format.
 • Research your target market, use focus groups, and understand the specific cultural or demographic differences that might affect a user’s perception of color.
 • Limit your palette to one to two main colors, with a set of accent colors that rotate in and out, depending on application.

Selecting a suite of fonts

Fonts work alongside colors to establish a recognizable look for your brand across social, your website, packaging, and other marketing materials.

As a general rule, choose two fonts: one for headings and one for body text (this might not include the font you use in your brand’s wordmark). Home brand Floof uses one sans serif font for navigation and headers and another serif font for the rest of the text. Note that its logo—a simple wordmark of its brand name—is a unique font not used anywhere else:

Save decorative fonts for your logo or in very limited applications while using a simple, accessible font for your website and product information on packaging. Forét’s fonts are simple and clean, making them legible at any size:

Determining aesthetic elements and effects

If you use a lot of lifestyle photography for your brand, you may want to establish a set of rules to set the tone, no matter who’s producing photos. Maybe that includes guidelines for mood, photo filters, colors, or other effects.

You can also design a set of graphic elements that you use across your branded properties. These may be characters, squiggles, or texture effects. Rotten candy brand uses consistent graphic elements like electrified stripes and grainy textures across its branding:

While OffLimits cereal uses a wordmark for its logo, consistent graphic elements like a family of brand mascots show up across all surfaces:

6. Design your logo and brand assets

While a logo design is one of the first things you might think of when building a brand, it should happen later in the process. That’s because it’s a critical identifier for your brand in the wild—and it’s hard to change once you’ve locked it in.

Your logo should be unique, identifiable, and scalable so it works at all sizes. It should also encompass all the work you’ve done on your brand so far. Does it invoke the feeling you hope to inspire in your customers? Does it tell a story that aligns with your brand values? Does it work in your brand colors?

Consider all the places where your brand’s logo will show up:

 • Website
 • Social media avatar
 • Product packaging
 • Video ads
 • YouTube channel banner
 • Browser favicon (the tiny icon that identifies your open browser tabs)
 • Email marketing
 • Press mentions and partnerships

You may need to create a few versions of your logo to make it work across applications. If you have a text logo, for example, it’ll be almost impossible to read as a favicon or social avatar. Create a simplified visual version of your logo that works as a square or circle.

Types of logos

Wordmarks, lettermarks, and other type-based logos are the most common type of logo for modern brands. But other styles may work better for you, depending on your goals and aesthetic. Some logo types include the following:

 • Abstract logos are a combination of shapes and colors that don’t easily tie back to anything in the real world. These are best used as a secondary logo, paired with a wordmark, while you build brand recognition.
 • Mascot logos are represented by the face of a character or real person you use as an ambassador for your brand. They can humanize your business by creating a relatable personality. This works best for kids’ brands or those looking for a retro feel (e.g., Wendy’s, Colonel Sanders for KFC).
 • Emblem logos are often circular and combine text with an emblem for a luxurious brand design. Avoid making them too fussy or they won’t scale (e.g., Polo Ralph Lauren).
 • Icon logos represent your brand as a visual metaphor. Unlike an abstract logo, an icon logo suggests something about the product (e.g., YouTube’s Play button logo).
 • Wordmarks or lettermarks are type-based logos that are either your full business name, a combination of letters, or an initial.

Brand identity logo examples

Because of the limitations that exist for each logo type, you can play with a combination of styles as well as have a few secondary logo options. Beauty brand Glossier has a simple wordmark logo used across its website and packaging:

Mushroom-based supplement brand Eons uses a combination of a wordmark and an icons logo (a simplified mushroom shape). These are used together or separate, as you can see here in different applications:

Lazypants also uses this approach, with a combination wordmark and icon that can be used independently, such as in this example where the icon only is stitched into its garments:

Designing your own logo

New brands are often working with a small budget. If this is the case for you, consider designing a logo yourself. You can use a free tool like Canva or try a logo maker. These work by generating sample logos based on basic information about your business.

If you have no design skills or don’t feel confident handling this important task yourself, consider hiring a pro. You can outsource the design through gig sites like Fiverr or Upwork or run a logo contest on 99Designs. If you’re running a business on Shopify, there are many Shopify Experts you can hire to design your brand identity—and even your website.

7. Apply your branding across your business

Applying your branding across your business gives it a cohesive brand story. No matter where customers encounter your brand—through a TikTok ad, in a retail store, or in their inbox—the experience should feel familiar and recognisable. As you build your website, set up your social accounts, and create your marketing plan, refer back to your brand guidelines, mission statement, and values to ensure every decision keeps target customers top of mind. Your website is the palace where you’ll have the most control over your brand identity. Use this space to its fullest potential. eCommerce website templates are a great jumping off point. Most of these, like the themes in Shopify’s Themes Store, are fully customizable, meaning you can apply your brand colors, fonts, and assets to a flexible layout.

Brand building is an evolution

Building a brand doesn’t stop after you design a logo. It is a continuous process of cementing your brand identity in the minds of your customers. Building a successful brand involves being consistent in your messaging and deliberate with your brand marketing. Now that you understand how to build a brand from scratch, you’ll continue brand building for the entire life of your business. You may need to evolve your brand as your values shift or as consumer trends dictate. Remember that if you rebrand, loyal customers should still be able to recognize your brand and receive the same experience. Looping in their feedback will help you grow your brand alongside the people who matter most.

Accurate and efficient estimates are key to a successful construction project. As such, it’s crucial to develop detailed and highly accurate take-offs. Proper construction take-off software significantly enhances this entire process.

With the right tools, contractors can create faster and more accurate bids and improve the way projects are managed. As a result, construction companies can maximize their profits with each construction job.

Here is a breakdown of how construction take-off software improves estimating efficiency.

The Importance of Construction Estimating

Construction estimation forms the basis for any construction project. Before a project can begin, construction managers need to know how much a project will cost. This enables them to plan the budget effectively and create an accurate bid.

Construction estimates rely on take-offs, which are measures of the quantities of materials and labour for a project. This enables contractors to accurately estimate how much it will cost to complete the project.

Accuracy is critical here. Without accurate construction take-offs and estimation, all kinds of issues can arise. The project can easily run over budget and over time. Or you can end up with too many materials and have excess waste.

Thus, accurate estimates are vital for the proper planning of a construction project. It enables contractors to submit better bids, thereby gaining a competitive edge over other contractors. In addition, it helps them maintain a good bottom line for each project.

How Construction Take-Off Software enhances the Estimating process

Using take-off software is necessary for efficient and accurate estimates. As a construction manager, your take-off software is one of the most important tools you have available.

Here are a few ways that this technology enhances the estimating process.

Automation and Accuracy

If estimators work manually, they have to determine the exact quantities of a project based on the blueprints or design documents. Not only is this incredibly time-consuming, but it also leaves a lot of room open for error.

No matter how experienced an estimator is, there is always the risk of a simple human error. And when it comes to construction take-offs, even the smallest mistake can have a dramatic effect.

By using construction take-off software, estimators can automate this process. The software can automatically generate a list of materials and quantities based on digital blueprints. This saves huge amounts of time, and it ensures complete accuracy.

Quantity takeoffs can also eliminate errors by using measurements that are extracted directly from the computer-aided design (CAD) quantity properties. The measurements can be superimposed onto various CAD revisions, highlighting under- and over-measurements.

A Simplified Process

Manual estimations are complex. There are various different formulas and estimators need to carefully recheck all their work to ensure it is free from errors. Thus, estimators need to be highly skilled and experienced.

Construction take-off software completely simplifies this process. The software automatically calculates quantities and has built-in formulas to use. As a result, you can create accurate estimations faster and with more ease.

Greater Flexibility

Construction take-offs often go through a couple of changes before the client accepts the bid and the project can begin. Manually changing estimates is an incredibly time-consuming process.

With construction take-off software, you can easily adjust estimates as needed. All it takes is a few clicks and your estimate will be updated.

Key Take-Off Technologies

Combining construction take-offs with other functions helps to enhance and streamline various project processes. Here are two key technologies that should be integrated with your take-off solution.

Data Integration

Take-off technology like Candy combines estimating, planning, and on-site control into one central platform. It links the Bill of Quantity with your construction schedule for better project management. This saves you from having to re-enter this type of data on different platforms or systems. As a result, it saves time and vastly improves accuracy.

In addition, if you use a cloud-based solution, like Candy Cloud, you can ensure that all stakeholders have access to project information at all times.

Reporting

Reporting tools are necessary during a project to help contractors make informed decisions. These tools use data from construction take-offs to create accurate and insightful reports. Construction managers can use these reports to make smart, data-backed decisions.

Conclusion

Construction managers need to be completely accurate when developing take-offs. Nothing adds more value to a project than accurate estimations, and this can be enhanced with the use of the right software.

The best take-off technologies, like Candy, involve various features, such as estimating, quantity take-offs, reporting and more. By keeping these processes digital, contractors will be able to vastly improve their estimation efficiency and project success.

The post Memory foam pillows, are they worth it? appeared first on An award-winning interior design studio you'll love..

]]>

Memory foam is not just for mattresses anymore: It’s also used to make pillows. But is it a good idea to go all-in on memory foam pillows to complete your perfect bed? We’re checking on our pillows today to determine whether it’s time for an upgrade.

What’s the Deal With Memory Foam Pillows?

Like memory foam mattresses, memory foam pillows are designed to contour to your body and absorb any shock. As a result, they can provide better spinal alignment, and they may even help tame snoring. Memory foam pillows can help back sleepers keep their necks aligned to their natural curves, and they can help side sleepers maintain proper form as well.

For travelers who need more cushion for their long flights and road trips, horseshoe-shaped compact memory pillows can provide convenient comfort and much-needed neck support. Since memory foam is made from polyurethane, it’s a viable alternative to down feathers that are collected from birds and that might cause allergic reactions in some people.

This also means that memory foam pillows tend to maintain consistent texture and form – as in, they’re less likely than down pillows to become lumpy over time. They’re also more likely to remain firm all night, as opposed to down pillows that may turn flat and require rearranging.

Is It Time to Look for a New Pillow?

Maybe you sleep on your back and need some extra support for your neck. Perhaps you’re looking for a cooling pillow that helps your body reach an optimal temperature. Likewise, you may be thinking of something that can provide a little more comfort while traveling. Or you might simply be in the market for a vegan and/or hypoallergenic alternative to down pillows.

Whatever your own situation is, it is easy to find new reasons to buy a new memory foam pillow. But really, is it necessary? If your old pillows are making you sneeze, leaving you with neck pain every morning, or leaving you feeling awkward in your airplane seat, this might be a good time to consider a new memory foam pillow.

Who Really Needs Memory Foam Pillows, and Who Should Skip Them?

If you’re heat-sensitive, you may need to proceed with caution and look carefully for pillows that specialize in keeping your head cool — particularly pillows that utilize cooling fabrics like bamboo and cotton. If you’re extra sensitive to odors, keep in mind that some memory foams contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that give off a pungent odor when new: This is called off-gassing. Typically, the off-gassing ends a few days after the memory foam in question enters a well-ventilated room. If you’re still concerned about the odor or potential health risks, make sure to look for products that are specifically labeled “Low VOCs.”

If you need a pillow that maintains consistent texture, helps with pain and snoring, contains no animal byproducts, and works great for home and travel, then you may benefit from a new memory foam pillow. With so many options now available, it shouldn’t be hard to find the right memory foam pillow for you.

When deciding between foam and spring mattresses, there are a few key differences to keep in mind. Foam mattresses conform to the body, are often more durable, and provide isolation from a partner’s movements during sleep. On the other hand, spring mattresses offer more bounce and are often cheaper. Additionally, while foam mattresses can cause heat retention, cooling technologies can mitigate this issue. Conversely, spring mattresses offer less support and can become noisy over time 1. It is worth noting that everyone has different preferences when it comes to mattresses, and it is important to test each option before making a final decision.

In terms of longevity, foam mattresses tend to hold up better than spring mattresses. The density of foam mattresses allows them to maintain their shape and resist sagging over time. In contrast, spring mattresses use coils that can wear out over time, causing sagging and a lack of support in certain areas 2.

Foam mattresses are also known for their ability to isolate movement, which makes them an excellent choice for couples or light sleepers. When sharing a bed, excessive movement by one partner can disturb the other’s sleep. Foam mattresses minimize this problem by reducing motion transfer, ensuring that one partner’s movements do not disturb the other 1.

Finally, people suffering from allergies should consider foam mattresses, as they are less likely to harbor allergens than spring mattresses. Dust mites can thrive in the coils of a spring mattress, making them a poor choice for allergy sufferers 2.

In conclusion, both foam and spring mattresses have their pros and cons. Foam tends to provide better support, last longer, and isolate motion, but can be more expensive and have heat retention issues. Spring mattresses offer more bounce, are generally cheaper, but can be less supportive and become noisy over time. Ultimately, the best choice depends on personal preferences and sleeping habits.

We purchased a mattress at your Highland Park store last weekend. We received excellent service from Jordan and Cheryl, we just wanted to pass along our compliments and appreciation! Nobody does furniture better.

What’s the difference between a memory foam vs spring mattress?

It all comes down to the materials used and the style of construction. The details of each style are discussed in later sections.

Which is better?

There’s no definitive answer to that question.

Of the two mattress types, innerspring beds are the older and more “traditional” option. Some may think of them as old-fashioned, but there are plenty of high quality, comfortable, and modern spring mattresses available.

Foam mattresses are a newer concept, but exceptionally popular. While memory foam was originally invented in the 1960s, the foams used today are far more advanced. Manufacturers now create specialty foams designed for specific applications – cooling, support, pressure relief – and combine them to develop well-rounded mattresses.

When comparing foam vs spring mattresses, there’s no clear “best” or “worst” option. There are simply too many variables to consider to make a generalized claim that one is better than the other.

Rather, it is better to frame the question as a matter of which one is the better choice for you and your needs. Each type of mattress tends to perform better in certain ways, making them generally better suited to the needs of different kinds of sleepers. There is also plenty of variation in performance among models of the same type, making it important to investigate how a mattress is constructed.

What is a Foam Mattress?

Memory foam is made by treating polyurethane foam with chemicals to enhance its density and viscosity. Memory foam’s viscoelastic nature allows it to mold to your body while providing pressure-point relief. Memory foam, also known as viscoelastic foam, is temperature and pressure-sensitive.

When you lie on memory foam, your body temperature and weight soften the foam forming around your body almost like a hug. The foam evenly distributes weight on the sleeping surface, relieving your sensitive areas and establishing a mattress for pressure points.

Every body part gets support as the contouring foam molds to your curves, making memory foam mattresses a good option for alleviating back pain or joint pains. If you are a back or side sleeper, memory foam provides natural spinal alignment and enhanced lumbar support.

Types of Memory Foam

Memory foam beds respond to your body heat and pressure, but they also tend to trap heat. To beat heat retention, some manufacturers add cooling features like gel, plant oils, copper, or graphite.

Traditional Memory Foam

By its nature, traditional memory foam mattresses have an open-cell design. However, some companies expand the cells for even better airflow. This combats the heat retention issue.

Gel Memory Foam

Gel memory foam contains liquid gel or gel beads swirled or infused into the mattress, enhancing its coolness. Gel beads (tiny capsules filled with gel) decrease the temperature of your bed. The gel comprises “phase-changing materials,” also known as “PCM,” which start off as solid and transform into liquid, absorbing your body heat.

The exact constituents of PCM is a closely-guarded secret by mattress manufacturers—it’s made of some synthetic materials and chemicals which are not known to be harmful. Gel foam may be paired with a fabric cover that also features PCM to establish a cooling mattress.

Plant-Based Memory Foam

In plant-based memory foam, a portion of the petroleum is substituted with plant oils, making the bed feel cooler and more responsive.

Memory Foam with Cooling Additives

Minerals like graphite and copper, known for being good conductors of heat, are added to memory foam to help in dissipating body heat. Additives like these enable you to sleep cool through the night. Copper is also antimicrobial, which can be a helpful feature inside a hypoallergenic mattress.

Foam mattresses are all-foam beds that are exceptionally popular for online mattress shoppers. They can be made out of a variety of foam materials, from memory foam to polyfoam, and typically contain several unique layers. Foam beds can be soft or firm, budget or luxury, so there is a huge amount of variety within this category.

Foam beds utilize a variety of materials to provide support and pressure relief. There are many types of foams, and often manufacturers will utilize several materials in each mattress.

Types of Foam

Polyurethane (Poly) Foam – Foam made from polyurethane, commonly referred to as simply “polyfoam,” is a very common ingredient in modern foam beds. Polyfoam is known to be much more bouncy and springy than materials like memory foam. Polyfoam is popular for use as a layer in modern all-foam mattresses, as well as for the top comfort layer in spring beds.

 • Regular polyfoam is a standard, relatively soft foam used primarily in transition layers.
 • High-density polyfoam is firmer and often used in underlying support layers.
 • High-resiliency polyfoam is firmer and more supportive, but significantly more expensive, so its use is less common.

Memory Foam – Memory foam is another very commonly used foam material. It’s made from similar polyurethane materials, with added ingredients to increase its density and viscosity. Memory foam is great for pressure relief, as it contours to the shape of the body. The term “memory” in memory foam refers to the material’s tendency to retain the shape of the body for a few seconds after being indented.

 • Standard memory foam is the traditional material that’s soft yet supportive, and generally affordable.
 • Open-cell memory foam is designed with openings in the tiny cells of foam, allowing for better airflow. This material feels a bit softer, and it will sleep cooler on warm nights.
 • Gel memory foam has tiny gel beads embedded into the memory foam material. The gel, combined with the open-cell design, helps to improve cooling and airflow.

Latex Foam – Latex is a natural rubber-like material that can be used to make a durable and bouncy foam. Latex mattresses are typically considered a category of their own, but some manufacturers also use a thin layer of latex in all-foam beds. Latex is often prized for its durability and environmental friendliness, although it is generally much more expensive than traditional polyurethane-based foams.

 • Dunlop latex is made using a more traditional, simple process, and results in a somewhat firmer feel.
 • Talalay latex foam is a more energy-intensive process that produces latex with a bouncier, yet softer feel.

Remember that most mattress manufacturers use a mix of different foam materials to create a well-balanced and comfortable bed. Typically you will see foam mattresses constructed of 2-5 layers, each with varying materials, densities, and intended purposes. When it comes to budget mattresses, you may see single-layer polyfoam beds – but otherwise, expect a blend of foam layers in most modern mattresses.

What is a Spring Mattress?

Spring mattresses, also called innerspring mattresses, are beds that utilize dozens to hundreds of metal springs to provide an underlying support layer. They also have softer plush material layers to increase comfort. Some find that spring mattresses feel more supportive than foam, at least initially. This is particularly true for heavier people, who may benefit more from the coiled spring support systems than a foam base.

Several factors can influence how a spring bed feels. Coil count is an important factor; most quality beds will have around 400 coils or more in a queen size mattress. However, keep in mind that a higher coil count does not necessarily equal a higher quality bed, as there are many factors at play.

Spring beds will also often have foam layers surrounding the coils, as well as a plush or polyfoam comfort layer on top. The quality, material, and thickness of these layers can greatly influence the comfort and feel of the mattress.

Coil gauge, referring to the thickness of the wire used, influences the firmness of the bed. Manufacturers will clearly list the intended firmness of each mattress model, so checking the coil gauge is not too important for consumers.

Lastly, the various types of springs used in these mattresses will impact their comfort and support ratings.

Types of Springs/Coils

Bonnell Coils – Bonnell coils are the original design used in the first spring mattresses, and some manufacturers still use them today. They are hourglass-shaped and can be made to be either soft or firm depending on the wire gauge. Bonnell coils are simple and cost-effective, so many mattresses utilize them.

Pocket Coils – Also called pocketed coils, this design features metal coils that are individually wrapped in fabric sleeves. This allows each coil to move independently from one another, which has the added effect of reducing noise. Pocketed coils are often used in higher-end beds, and are generally more expensive to make. They do a great job of providing targeted pressure relief, and tend to provide a more buoyant feel overall.

Offset Coils – Offset coils share some properties of pocket coils, but they are joined together with hinged wires. This allows the coils to flex under soft pressure, but provide firm support when it’s needed. Offset coils can provide more firmness than pocketed coils, so many innerspring beds with higher firmness ratings over 7 out of 10 will use some form of offset coil. Beyond this application, offset coils are not commonly used.

Continuous Coils – Continuous coil design features a single wire that is used to construct an entire row of “coils”. Each of these rows is then attached to each other using helical wires. This design provides a very firm support system, but because each component is joined together, continuous coils have much less ability to shape themselves to a body profile.

Which is Better for You?

Ultimately, choosing the right bed for you involves a lot more than just picking between foam and spring. There are high quality, comfortable and supportive mattresses of both types available – so in the end, it’s more about picking the right mattress model.

With that said, there are a few last things to consider.

Most people will be happy with a high-quality foam mattress. Foam provides a great middle-ground by offering a supportive and pressure-relieving fit, while also feeling soft and comfortable. Side sleepers, in particular, tend to prefer foam beds, as they often do a better job of conforming to the shape of the body.

People who tend to sleep hot at night may wish to opt for a spring mattress. Innerspring beds offer far better airflow, which helps to keep the bed cool at night. Sleepers who are heavy or sleep on their stomachs should opt for either innerspring, hybrid or very firm foam beds, in order to get enough support. Softer foam models will likely sink too much to feel comfortable for these sleepers. Most online mattress retailers now offer free trial periods, where you can test the bed for up to several months. If you’re unsure about a mattress, this flexibility may provide a little reassurance during the purchase process.

Say goodbye to grime and hello to shiny floors, streak-free mirrors, and a spotless sink

Bathroom cleaning is one of those chores that feels like a punishment. It only takes a second to flashback to weekend chores and first jobs to realize that cleaning bathrooms is low on the totem pole. No one wants to willingly clean a room full of grime, mildew, and other (maybe some) gag-worthy residue. Before you run to dial a professional cleaning crew, know that although the showerhead and the toilet could probably use some scrubbing, overall, the bathroom is probably not the dirtiest place in your home. (Might not be a bad idea to put an HVAC air vent cleaning on your radar and give baseboards some serious attention.)

Instead of focusing on the bathroom buildup, read on to find out how you can transform a utilitarian space into a clean bathroom that doubles as a retreat and how to have a bathtub free of soap scum where you can soak the day away. “The hardest part about bathroom cleaning is getting started,” says Austin-based Vanesa Amaro, TikTok’s “Queen of Cleaning” and Clorox spokesperson. “Cleaning doesn’t have to be a miserable chore. Put some music on and enjoy the process.” Even better, you can rope your family or roommate into bathroom cleaning. Here is everything you need to know to get started.

What is the best thing to clean bathrooms?

You can use baking soda, glass cleaner, white vinegar—you name it. “You don’t need to buy specific bathroom cleaning products,” says Anita Birges, owner of Mise en Place in Sydney. “Things like white vinegar, baking soda, and dishwashing soap can do just as good of a job and are more cost effective.” Baking soda is a great solution for removing rust and soap scum, especially around faucets. Not into DIY cleaning hacks? Glass cleaner can quickly buff all your mirrors back to pristine condition. Lysol Power Foam bathroom cleaner can power through gunk after sitting for just 10 minutes on bathtubs, shower doors, ceramic tile, sinks, and chrome fixtures. Arm yourself with a good scrub brush, a broom with a long handle, a squeegee, sponges, and microfiber cloths, and the bathroom cleaning party can get started.

Amaro recommends cleaning products that work for multiple surfaces and techniques. You don’t want to limit yourself to a cleaner with only one specific purpose. An all-purpose cleaner can save you money and time. Her go-to options are Clorox Disinfecting All-Purpose cleaner—which can be used on toilets, bathtubs, and sinks—and Clorox Scentiva Disinfecting Wet Mopping Cloths for floors because they trap dirt and hair, and work especially well behind the toilet and underneath the sink.

To get the ceramic tile and faucet handles looking spotless in your throne room, get something with hydrogen peroxide, like Lysol Multi-Purpose cleaner. This cleaner is especially suited for a small bathroom, so you don’t have to feel cramped by lugging several cleaning products.

There are a few things to be extremely careful when it comes to bathroom cleaning products. When using bleach, you should never mix it with ammonia or another cleaner, Amaro says. To disinfect, especially around the toilet bowl and on the toilet brush, add one part Clorox Disinfecting Bleach to ten parts water and store in a spray bottle so you can use as soon as you spot grime. You just want to be careful when using bleach products, especially around colorful towels, as it will discolor the fabric.

What is the easiest way to clean a bathroom?

For an easy bathroom cleaning routine, buy disinfectant wipes in bulk to wipe down the sink every other day, if not daily. This will keep soap scum and icky mildew from forming around the drain. Microfiber cloths work quite well too, especially on mirrors. To prevent fogging and maintain a streak-free mirror, Birges recommends buffing shaving cream onto the mirror. Birges is also a fan of using a soap dispensing dish brush to clean out stubborn toothpaste gunk in the sink.

If your schedule won’t allow for a daily wipe down, make a point to clean the area around your sink weekly because it’s one of the places where there’s more movement. When it comes to the bath, Amaro recommends a proactive approach. “Don’t wait until you see dirt and grime buildup in your tub,” she says. “Wipe down shower tiles, walls, fixtures, and plastic shower curtains.” Birges washes her bath towels after three uses and her bath mats once a week. “If they get too wet in between, I hang them up outside to get a little air ventilation to not have mildew build up in them,” she says.

For the bathroom floor, a quick run through with a Swiffer mop will pick up hair, dust, and any spills.

How do I deep clean my bathroom?

Once you implement the easy-to-clean bathroom cleaning tips into your routine, deep clean your bathroom with the same approach as you would take to cleaning your house: section by section. Start by putting away products scattered on the countertop, taking out the trash, and tossing towels and bath mats into the washing machine.

When deep cleaning your bathroom, Amaro suggests removing the toilet seat, sink drain stoppers, and showerheads. “Make sure you reach those difficult areas you may forget about in your routine cleans,” she says. This is a good time to go through your cleaning checklists and learn how to unclog the shower drain, how to clean a showerhead, and how to clean a bathtub. Here, check out a deep cleaning routine that breaks bathroom cleaning down to a science.

Step 1

Perhaps the hardest part of deep cleaning is getting rid of unused junk, both on the countertop and the medicine cabinet. Yes, that means parting with a tube of mascara you’ve had since pre-pandemic times. Time to toss it. Really. “If anything is past its expiration date, throw it out!” Amaro says.

Step 2

Amaro recommends learning how to clean a toilet the right way. Start by lifting the toilet seat, cleaning the toilet bowl and wiping down the seat. Amaro emphasizes that you need to clean the outside of the toilet bowl too, all the way to where it meets the floor. You’d be surprised how much dust and hair collects below. For deep cleaning the toilet, Birges recommends dropping in three denture tablets and then scrubbing the inside of the toilet bowl with a toilet brush and some toothpaste. One of Birges’s favorite tips is to put a few drops of essential oil on the inside of the toilet roll to keep the bathroom smelling lovely long after you’re done cleaning.

Step 3

For household mold in the shower and around the bath, Birges came up with a mold away DIY spray to get rid of mold and keep it from coming back: Mix one cup of white vinegar, 20 drops of clove oil, and 20 drops of tea tree oil. Spray this mixture on the affected area, wait 20 minutes, and then wipe it all clean with hot water. You can also use this mixture for ceramic tile and grout.

Step 4

Tackle the mirrors to keep them streak-free, especially if they are prone to toothpaste, makeup splatter buildup, and water droplets. “When you’re cleaning your bathroom mirrors, turn off any lights directly above the mirror, because the heat of the light bulb can evaporate your cleaning solution and cause streaks,” she says.

Step 5

Birges mixes together one cup of white vinegar, half a cup of dishwashing liquid, and one cup of water to create a glass shower doors cleaning solution. “I then spray it onto my shower screen and squeegee off,” she says. “This solution is great at removing soap scum, water marks, and residue.”

Step 6

If you have a litter box in your bathroom, make sure to sweep or vacuum up any scattered litter and mop under the box. You can also use disinfecting wipes to cleanse the outside of the box. If you have time, take the litter box outside and give it a full rinse, using a designated brush to scrub away any gunk with unscented soap, like Dawn Platinum Free & Clear dish soap.

Step 7

When you’re wrapping up your deep clean, you want to make sure to give your cleaning supplies some TLC too. This means your toilet wands, caddy, spray bottle, old toothbrush, squeegee, microfiber cloths, and any other items you’re using. Spraying these with a disinfectant bleach solution, like Clorox Disinfecting Mist will go a long way, especially when it comes to the toilet brush. This will help prevent mildew and mold from forming in your toilet brush cleaner holder. You want to make sure everything you’re using is clean and sanitary in the first place. This step can be easily overlooked, so make sure you take those extra few moments. Your future self will definitely thank you.

In order to maintain the appearance of your headboard and keep it looking clean, follow these steps:

 1. Dust regularly – Use a soft, dry cloth to remove dust from the surface of the headboard. You can also use a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery brush attachment to remove dust from the fabric.
 2. Address spills immediately – If there is a spill on the headboard, blot it with a clean, damp cloth as soon as possible. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the stain, as this can damage the fabric.
 3. Use a cleaning solution – If the headboard is particularly dirty or stained, you can use a cleaning solution specifically designed for upholstery. Be sure to test the solution on an inconspicuous area first to ensure that it does not damage or discolor the fabric.
 4. Protect the fabric – To prevent future stains and damage, consider using a fabric protector spray on the headboard. This will act as a barrier against spills and other potential hazards.
 5. Make vacuuming a weekly habit – Run the vacuum over the headboard, allowing it to collect any dust or loose dirt that is clinging onto the fibres of the fabric. Use a quality scented fabric spray, like Febreze, to keep the headboard smelling fresh.

Overall, maintaining your headboard is simply a matter of regularly cleaning and caring for it. With a little effort, you can keep your headboard in great condition for years to come.

Use a vacuum cleaner’s soft brush attachment to gently remove loose dust and dirt from the headboard’s surface.

Does an upholstered headboard get dirty? Let’s get right to it and learn the truth. Yes, they do. Like most things in the world, upholstered headboards collect dirt over time, especially without proper care. Yet, many people go for upholstered headboards, and who can blame them? Cushioned and fabric-clad headboards can make bedrooms look extra cozy. Plus, they provide a soft and comfortable place to rest your head as you read or binge on Netflix shows. Not to mention with fabric like velvet (and the right kind of tufting, to boot!), they add a touch of luxury to your space. So, your heart might really be set on upholstered headboards, and we definitely understand. But there are a few things you need to know and consider before you make that order final.

You can’t change the reality that upholstered headboards are magnets for dirt—stains, pet hair, dust, and quite possibly bedbugs. The fabric (plus the cushion) also tends to soak up moisture, which means the headboard may develop grime and odor over time.

We’re not saying that upholstered headboards are a bad choice for a bedroom. The comfort and aesthetic value they add to your resting place make them worth it. But they do require some extra upkeep, and this is exactly what you need to be ready for.

 • Frequent vacuuming is the key. The best way to keep an upholstered headboard in good condition is to clean it often with a vacuum. Run it with a vacuum at least once a week or as often as you change the sheets. Use the extension wand to remove dust and other tiny debris from tough corners. Sometimes, pet hair persistently sticks to fabric, even with a vacuum. A lint roller might help you out.
 • Steam and spot clean as needed. If heavier dirt is not removed by a vacuum, a steam cleaner might. Steaming cleaning is more thorough and can remove tougher stains and grease. It may also get rid of allergens, dust mites, and bedbugs and even prevent mold from developing. But if steam cleaning is a bit too taxing, use a spot remover to clear out small stains and marks. Of course, you can always ask professional cleaners for help.
 • Keep moisture away. Anything that makes your upholstered headboard damp is an enemy. Prevention is important here, so it’s important to avoid exposing it to moisture. If If you use a humidifier in your bedroom, place it away from your headboard. If you live in an area with a humid climate or if your home recently had a leak or flooding, you can use a dehumidifier for a couple of hours (or as needed) to remove excess moisture.

Cleaning fabric is not “one size fits all.” How you remove dirt and stain varies, depending on the type of fabric used. As you can imagine, velvet and leather may require a different cleaning process than, say, cotton or linen. You really need to amp up your headboard maintenance game by learning how to clean a specific material. Otherwise, your effort might wind up in vain. The upholstered headboard may come with cleaning instructions, anyway.

Wood headboards are the classic choice–versatile and very easy to manage. If you’re into feng shui, you should know that solid wood is the best material for a headboard. A sturdy headboard that’s attached securely to the bed frame helps provide you balance and stability in life. Aside from solid wood, you can go for metals, such as wrought iron, brass, copper, and stainless steel. Leather is also a good choice of fabric if you really want to go for the upholstered look. Another option is rattan. With the rise of bohemian design, using rattan as a headboard material could make your bedroom look chic and trendy.
